An enforced orthodoxy. Supported by a morality police and a politicized security apparatus. Where people are afraid to speak their mind. And stand up for their rights. Where a media is controlled by and a flack for government. And remains silent in the face of political arrests and persecution.

The Iran situation can be laid firmly at that lying, hypocritical, bumbling, incompetent, sleaze, Jimmy Carter. He stabbed the Shah of Iran in the back. The Shah was the dictator of Iran. He may have been a brutal dictator. All of the Islamic run nations are.

The Shah was westernizing Iran, no more dress codes, no more dress/Islamic police. Women could go to university and wear western clothes. A theocracy is the most brutal of all dictatorships because God is on your side and no matter how brutal you are, God approves.

Carter withdrew US support of the Shah and the Shah had to flee for his life. Carter knew who would replace the Shah. It was to be the brutal, religious fanatic, the Ayatollah Khomeini. Why would any sane person do this? Carter knew what would happen as soon as Khomeini disembarked the plane in Iran yet he did it anyway.

So lay the brutality and riots right at Carter's feet. What an asshole!

I lived in Iran as the revolution was unfolding. I left a few months before the Shah. He and his father, much like Attaturk in nearby Turkey, sought to modernize Iran, and succeeded to a great extent. Yes there were cruelties and excesses (Savak quickly comes to mind), but that’s true of pretty much every nation state. Education and industry were booming, the middle class was rapidly expanding and, most especially, women had equality and opportunities unknown in that part of the world. In modernizing, however, he created an elected legislature which removed consultative decision-making from the Bazaars, where it traditionally lay. His father, Mohammad Reza, took land from the (Islamic) church and redistributed it to the poor. Since land=power in such a society, he greatly weakened the power of the mollahs. When the revolution unfolded, it was led by the two groups which had been disenfranchised by modernization, the bazaaris and the mollahs.

100% truth! I was in high school in the late 70s. 2 Persian girls came to our school because their parents in Iran had sent them to live with a relative in the US when they realized that the Shah would be ousted. Their parents were academics who worked at a University there. They told me that their parents knew that things were going to go backward for women in Iran once the Ayatollah gained power. They preferred the Shah because he was more progressive thinking and knew that the Ayatollah would be as brutal a dictator or worse. Carter was ineffective and weak like Biden. At least he wasn’t corrupt, like Biden, but he certainly was complicit, similar to Barry’s withdrawal of support for Mubarak.

It is not a few elite universities stifling speech that opposes the quasi-religious belief in race-centering all things. I just went through helping my son find a U.S. Uni (with exceptional grades behind him, and scores). Speech supression and bullying other students for holding different views is the norm. I agree, Iran will not honor the treaty.

I challenge my Jewish Democrat friends on this issue and they play “whataboutism” and dodge the question. It is beyond frustrating at this point.

I’ve read a lot on this topic, some good analysis by conservative foreign policy experts and they all agree: Obama wanted the USA to exit the Middle East and he wanted Iran as the strongest power there to keep the others in line. This is why Israel has been so successful in achieving peace with their moderate Arabs neighbors under the Abraham Accords. It turns out that security is more important to moderate Arabs than oil. Lonesome, it will never be completely proven, as I'm sure you will retort, but reports over the years have suggested Reagan dealt with the terrorists in power in Iran in 1980, before the election here, in order to release the Americans held hostage there but only after the election..

However, I don't think Regan went that far. I wouldn't call this a negotiation but a threat. He could have threatened to bomb their port facilities, oil fields and their highway infrastructure. That would have prompted them to release the hostages.

I think this is a pretty good guess as the Iranians respond only to violence. It is all they know. Diplomacy doesn't work with these fanatics.

I have nothing to back up this assumption but I don't think Regan was in the negotiating mood. Negotiation would never work with these religious fanatics.

The moment the Iranians took over our embassy, Carter should have told Iran that he would bomb them back to the stone age if they didn't release the hostages unharmed but Carter was a dithering fool, a wimp with no stomach for tough talk, no backbone.

I apologize to for making a critical and snarky comment on a prior article sharing a morning news show clip of Masih Alinejad. I had never heard of her and spouted off in ignorance.

Things have become so confusing I feel I can’t tell up from down anymore.

Prominent women of the Democrat party screamed bloody murder over someone like justice Brett Kavanaugh. Women like AOC and the squad, Linda Sarsour are promoted as media darlings.

I did a google search and learned Ms. Alinejad had her instagram account shut down this past summer.

My poorly written and uninformed comment was really a criticism of media and the performative outrage of the left in our culture. Claiming to care about women’s rights, human rights, etc. yet always tossing any woman, any minority under the bus who doesn’t fall directly in line with the regime, or says anything to harm their messaging and agenda. Women like J.K. Rowling and also Bari Weiss.

Christine Blasey-Ford was touted as a national hero who bravely came forward for women’s rights. Everyone saw and heard the outrage from Sarsour and the squad. Social media has never sensored them for lies or even outright antisemitism. As far as I know.

But this woman? I’m just starting to learn about her. Yes there are some articles and network appearances to be found and now this podcast which I intend to listen to.

Apparently sensorship of her content on instagram was an “oops” according to FB executives. It’s just odd how these errors only seem to go one on one direction.

It's inspiring and heartening to see young people rising up against this odious theocracy. Unfortunately, it will fizzle, just as the previous rebellions did.

There are about 2 million Revolutionary Guards and Iranian Hezbollah forces who are fanatically dedicated to supporting the regime, they are well armed, and the regime has had 40 years to build an internal security network, secret prisons with torture chambers, etc. They will not be budged that easily, certainly not by a few thousand or even a few hundred thousand young urban rebels. The regime will just say "Pfft" and put them down.

Obama offered the regime a glimmer of hope, by offering them money in exchange for "stopping" their nuclear program, but of course they simply moved it under a mountain where it could not be detected. Thanks to Obama, the regime is stronger today than ever; they have no reason to change.

Trump saw that only when the country has hit rock bottom will anything change. He cut off the lifeline and actually tried to treat Iran like the pariah state that it is. He also demonstrated the willingness to drone attack the Iranian terror leadership. Their economy tanked, and there was a sense of desperation in the air.

Trump also reaffirmed the U.S.-Israel alliance and actually treated Israel like an ally; his son-in-law led an initiative to work out a truce/mutual recognition treaty between Israel and 5 Arab/Muslim states, bypassing the intractable Palestinian issue. Saudi Arabia was not a part of the agreement but it was widely suspected they were about to join. Iran was faced with a united front including Israel's military might.

Then, unbelievably, Trump was toppled and replaced with a pro-Iranian regime led by Biden and a whole crew of Obama alumni. Biden offered Iran an olive branch once again, making mockery of the past 4 years of tough diplomacy and progress toward destabilizing the mullah regime.

Biden, like Obama, ignores democracy uprisings as an embarrassment. He'd much rather the Iranians be suppressed into silence, so that he can achieve a "nuclear deal" and look good in the upcoming elections.

The American people who voted for this odious man have a lot to answer for.

We need a whole lot more of this. We've been conditioned to think in terms of phases: this too shall pass. But the turmoil, hate, greed, oppression, confusion, and destruction consuming us will not pass during our lifetime or the next or the next. Eventually, maybe in many hundreds of years, it will probably fade but not before it takes down all the beauty and wisdom we have built in the last five hundred years.

This will not pass. But WE can make it stop. Future generations will judge us. Can we live with the history that will be written? I know I can live with the history that would be written about me.
