This is a statement of fact. It is counter to the conventional "wisdom" of academic and media elites. But it is a fact. The despised, cruel, stupid, George W Bush gave Afghan women a reason to live w/ freedoms they never had. And kindly, empathetic, Uncle Joe pissed it all away, leaving these women to be raped and imprisoned. Your children's high school history teachers won't teach your kids this "inconvenient truth."

Trump signed the deal with the Taliban:

@MarkS

As erratic and unpredictable as Trump was, I honestly think that if this Taliban blitzkrieg had been unleashed on his watch, he would have reacted robustly, deal or no deal.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that Trump hated to be made to look like a fool. He couldn’t order B-52s and Hellfire missiles to be launched against the media, but he sure could have on the advancing Taliban.

Biden has brought shame on the United States. Perhaps Trump did too in other ways, but not with such tragic consequences, and not with the gallons of blood that are already pouring off Biden’s hands.

Expand full comment

Exactly. Trump was a fool for entering into the deal with the Taliban, and lots of people posted about that at the time. But Joe Biden hasn’t had any problem changing Trump’s policies, even those that were working (such as remain-in-Mexico). The fact that Biden continued this disastrous policy, and then just one month ago emphatically denied that Afghanistan would collapse when the US pulled out means that Biden can’t pass the buck here: he owns 100% of this disaster, even if his original intent was merely to implement Trump’s stupid policy.

Expand full comment

YES ! Biden and company own this. If Trump was wrong on what to to, Biden is in charge so he needed to do what’s right. We’ll hear a littany of the most contorted versions of “Trump’s fault”. And the media will be (likely are) scrambling to rewrite history.

Expand full comment

Sorry but we had to leave this disastrous country sometime. Should have been 19 years ago after killing as many terrorists as possible.

Trump fans are now criticizing Biden for *not reversing Trump's accomplishments enough.* What a shameless lot you are. It's nothing but red team blue team.

Please understand my point. I totally understand a decision to leave. 75% of Americans agree. THAT is not the issue here. The issue is the pathetic “plan” and execution.

So after honest discussion and decision making, IF that’s the decision then Do It Right.

Biden and his lobotmized supporters are just leaning on a mantra that “Trump said the same thing”. Trump agreed to leave, but not to make a bloody carnival out of it. If Trump had moved from a decision to it’s execution with the same blunders I’d be just as critical of him. The ineptitude will cost a lot of lives.

A decision to do something is different from it’s execution. I sure don’t know why those two basic points are so hard for so many people to separate.

Expand full comment

Not true. Glad to be leaving Afghanistan. Think it was executed poorly. Perhaps you are the shameless shill

We needed to leave. 20 years is plenty long enough. There never was a viable “end game” in Afghanistan.

What would Trump have done? Drop bombs on Kabul? Or send the ground troops back in before withdrawing them again?

Once the US is out, the Taliban will take over. No president, living or dead, could prevent that.

Huh? Weird that this didn’t happen when Trump was President.

Perhaps the willingness to evaporate Soleimani at the airport had some utility?

Biden has overturned many agreements done by Trump.

Anyway the issue is not the American withdrawal....the issue is the recklessness with which people in Afghanistan who worked with Americans have been betrayed by Biden administration and its incompetence.

Does the administration even care?

And Obama had his Iran nuclear deal. Trump walked away from that one. Biden could have done the same with Trump’s deal. Neither were binding treaties and in both instances our counterparts were not exactly acting in good faith.

While my heart goes out to these people, I am incredibly angry at our government and, by extension, the people who voted for Biden. Think what you want about Trump, but at least he had a reasonable, measured plan for leaving Afghanistan.

I agree that Biden's exit plan (or lack thereof) was a complete and utter catastrophe. Biden must take all the blame for this embarrass outcome, but it's excessive to direct any anger towards those who voted for Biden. Afghanistan was not an issue voters gave much weight towards when casting their ballots. Perhaps many would have voted differently if they knew what we do now, but hindsight is 2020 and there's always a next election. This embarrassing outcome will undoubtedly hurt the next Dem presidential candidate.

20 years to get their shit together. The fact that our pedigreed elites are so shocked by this is a testament to their incompetence. You could have asked any private in the army, after their first deployment there, if this is exactly how things would have ended - no matter how long we were there making the place safer for the ladies - and they’d have said, “duh!” But, ask some senior military official, or that other type of idiot from some Washington think tank, and they’d have said, “just need more time and I promise that Afghanistan will be the very beacon of democracy.” This was 100% predictable and inevitable. Get over it, hope the best for your Afghan friends that are still there. But this country, America, is super fucked up right now and needs our attention. We can’t want democracy for Afghanistan more than Afghans themselves cares bout Democracy. That’s not a plan for success - it’s a plan for exactly what you’re seeing meow - a cluster f*ck of American hubris.

Be honest. Biden is not in charge. He’s basically an eggplant. And he wasn’t much better than that last November. He is a result of people not liking mean tweets. Well those who voted for him, it’s on them. I suspect the author of this apologia voted for Biden.

Instead of the crap reportage we get from almost everywhere in the DNC press gaslighting the readership regarding Joey eggplant, I wish someone would investigate who actually IS in charge. It’s someone who is in cahoots with China and Iran and wants to destroy this country. My bet is on Soros via ValJar.

Tens of billions went straight into the pockets of the military-industrial complex over 20 years, enough for a Marshall Plan to rebuild the country in our image. No one has even tried to audit where that money went. Our legacy media, now just a lapdog of the Deep State, made no effort. Now the amoral plutocrats and their buddies in the Pentagon and Capitol Hill, now that the gravy train has stopped, will abandon our few friends over there to torture and death. There are no words for my contempt for Washington, its resident deep state, and its enablers today. May they never make more billions off another foreign adventure.

This is exactly what it was. We weren't there to help the Afghans build a beacon of democracy. We were there to spend money on equipment and training to enrich the MIC. Most of the equipment went missing or it fell into disrepair because of rampant illiteracy. Training was managed by contractors as well. If they fell short of targets, they would fudge the numbers.

Apparently, this was an open secret. This outcome was entirely predictable. We failed the Afghans LONG before this horrific excuse for a withdrawal. Speaking of which, we pulled all of our air support. Might as well roll out the red carpet. It is pretty obvious that we never intended to help the Afghan people.

Our credibility on the world stage is gone. The world is now a more dangerous place. Our leaders may be “woke” but are morally bankrupt.

Now is not the time to point fingers and play politics. We must come together as a nation and understand that the world is indeed a dangerous place full of bad actors. Pleading for mercy with religious zealots will never work. G-d help us if Iran or the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan get a hold of nuclear weapons.

Expand full comment

Uh, bad news Alan. The JCPOA brokered by Obama (and never ratified by the Senate, which is why Trump could simply repeal it), basically allowed the Iranians to develop nuclear weapons after a sunset period that is now virtually over. It also didn't address Iran's development of ballistic weapons which can now reach Europe, nor did it address Iran's weaponization of conflicts in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen. Incredibly, Biden has tried to resuscitate the JCPOA. And during the Arab Spring when the people of Iran were rising up against the ruling Clerisy, Obama was silent. America has a long history of incompetence with respect to foreign policy, but recent events have taken it to a whole new level. The current tragedy in Afghanistan is the latest and perhaps one of the most shameful examples.
