And to think that Merrick Garland might have become a Supreme Court Justice.

I think we need a coalition of Republicans and disaffected Democrats, people from around the center to take this country back from dangerous extremists. Reasonable people who want this country's children to be educated without the political propaganda that infects today's public and private schools.

The pattern of tyranny is one of the oldest documented malformations of government that we have. When governments are unable to control their people with lies they turn to brute Force. This is not new or shocking and history is rife with examples. Stop believing what people say and start watching what they do. The current administration is much more in the vein of tyranny than almost any that have come before it....

I couldn't love this more if I tried. Thank you so much Ms. Maron for writing this piece. I was literally cheering as I read it.

Much of my career has been devoted to studying and publishing about terrorism so I know a bit about this topic. What is striking when I observe the past week's actions by the Biden Administration and AG Garland is that it's a well-known and well-used tactic that many regimes have utilized to silence political opponents. Don't like what your opponent has to say? Label them a terrorist and suddenly they can be legally and easily silenced, if not removed, from the political landscape. This tactic has no place in American politics and Biden should be ashamed.

The fact that Biden and AG Garland decided to utilize this tactic is perhaps the most important and dangerous sign that we've moved into a new place in our domestic discourse. It cannot be allowed to stand. Regardless of one's political persuasion, every parent, every voter, and every taxpayer needs to send an explicit and immediate message to the White House, their representatives, and their op-ed pages that this is a step too far and will not be tolerated.

Notwithstanding the subsequent disclosure of AG Garland's conflict-of-interest given his son-in-law's livelihood relies upon CRT training in schools and districts, and the hints (still to be verified) that this "letter" and process had roots in September White House meetings, the precedent being established by the Biden Administration and AG Garland to target parents as political opponents for engaging in constitutionally protected speech is chilling. Certainly we saw the effects in an earlier era and with a man named Joe McCarthy what the price is when swathes of political opponents can be painted with broad strokes as "enemies of the people."

Ultimately, one has to consider why the Biden Administration, AG Garland, educational administrators, and school boards (not to mention a certain VA gubernatorial candidate) are so very concerned about parents scrutinizing what they're doing in the classroom to their children. What do they have to hide?

I hope Maud Maron wins her seat on New York's City Council. She's a voice of calm reason, and it infuriates me that nonviolent people like her are being investigated and labeled as "domestic terrorists."

What's happening in the schools today is beyond comprehension. If I had school age children, I would have to homeschool them to prevent them from being brainwashed by all the gender and antiracisim propaganda. The US is beginning to ape the worst excesses of China's Cultural Revolution.

Garland's memo is just shameful. The extent to which illiberalism and authoritarianism are spreading from the far left to mainstream Democrats is terrifying. And out of the other side of their mouths they talk about fascism on the right...

It's quite clear that progressives in DC under Joe Biden have loss patience convincing the "rubes, Trumpers and rednecks" (ie, anyone who doesn't blindly agree with everything they say) to smarten up and come around to the new reality. From vaccine mandates to DOJ attacks on parents, to IRS surveillance of our financial lives, to questioning the very reason why America exists, we will be made to comply by Leftists. No dissent is allowed, and if dissent is chosen, the gov't will come knocking (or crashing) on your door. It's hard to believe that Biden voters really wanted all of this, but I don't see them coming forward and denouncing these tactics. All I can say is if there isn't a red wave of monumental proportions in '22 and '24, we're through as a nation I'd want to live in.

Dear Ms. Maron, thank you so much for writing this column. I was stunned when I saw that letter from the US Attorney General.

It's the kind of event that you'd expect in an authoritarian government as it is clearly an effort to quash disagreement by force and threats. And it's especially rich to see that letter coming from a political milieu that spends a good portion of its time warning the world about authoritarians and authoritarian governments.

I see that certain comments are taking you to task for your political beliefs....as if those beliefs were not your right.

I say this as a (former) life-long Democrat: the Left is responsible for this madness, either pro-actively or complicity.

Today's witch-hunts and censorship are arguably worse than anything I experienced on the other end of the religious right's ire. Trust me, I was in the trenches.

If you continue to vote for Democrats, don't be surprised when they come for you, too.

Don’t forget, Ms. Maron: you voted for it. There is not a chance in hell that the previous administration would have ever stooped to anything as fascist, totalitarian, and profoundly un-American

Garland will marshal all the forces of the FBI, state, and local government to address domestic terrorism allegedly wrought by Moms and Dads who don’t want CRT taught to their children. CRT is a racist, anti-America program based on Marxist ideology.

Fascinatingly, Merrick’s daughter and her husband stand to make a lot of money off CRT.

Rebecca Garland married Xan Tanner who is a founder and the president of Panorama Education, an analytical software and services company in Boston, The New York Times reported.

Stop voting for democrats. The unfortunate reality is that the party is beholden to radicals. Biden’s admin are actually engaging in activities that we were all warned Trump, the fascist, may do. Progressives and the democrats are totalitarian by every measure.

Very well said! The schools gaslight us about Critical Race Theory by never uttering the words. It's hidden under "Social Emotional Learning," "Diversity, Equity, Inclusion," and "Culturally Competent Teaching." And we're not buying it. So the gaslighters recruit the feds to threaten and intimidate us. Calling us "racists" isn't working any more.

Bari. You might want to try and enable an ability for users to block others. You have a couple of trolls that seem to delight in taking over the conversations. If I could block, say jt, I could cut the reading by half. Having trolls Post the same snark over and over and basically being a bully, doesn’t enhance my subscription or my reading pleasure. Thanks.

As a lifelong liberal, this is what you voted for, so this is what you get. This is the mid point on the slippery slope you ignored when you went all in for things on the left. In hindsight maybe you shouldn’t have done that. But you did. And this is where you are. I’m sure you were outraged when McConnell tossed Merritt garland aside. So now we have the kinder gentler side of the garland totalitarian to contend with. Ain’t life grand? And so what if you never raised your voice? You were with people who did so you too are bad.

So howzabout you put that law degree to good use and start suing. Put your bona fides where your dismay is. Start defending parents against the swamp. Talk (writing) is cheap. Action is hard.

My guess is that in the spring of 2023 we'll start seeing some impeachment hearings on cabinet level officials. Garland's behavior in particular is completely beyond the pale.
